Utility is in the eye of the beholder! If you are an avid kinkster, lack of access to toys for whatever reasons, be it privacy, space, availability or affordability, should be no barrier to your fun.

Toys enhance fun and as someone who was once averse to getting toys, I can confirm that toys are every bit worth it. And if you play solo then they can indeed give you a fulfilling experience. However, when we say toys, it covers more than what the regular sex toy market offers.

Toys are defined as objects that you have for fun or pleasure. Needless to say, in our context it refers to kinky or sexual pleasure or gratification. This really widens the scope of what can be considered as a toy. Thus, barring the aesthetics and focusing on the utility or function, a kinky toy is any object that can provide kinky pleasure.

While one article or one person’s experience cannot sum up the entire topic of common objects that can double as kinky toys, this article serves as a starting point for newbies who do not have sex toys. It also gives some tips on how to practice discreet play and safeguards to ensure your blissful little secret remains that way.

Since we are focusing on the functional aspect of the objects, it is best to categorize kinky pleasure based on the purpose of play. I have elaborated on some of the common types I am acquainted with below and objects that can be used for them. However, feel free to add more types and object suggestions in the comments below from your experiences.
Insertables: They can be both vaginal and anal. Common objects that can be used are long cylindrical or phallic shaped objects. A lot of people also use vegetables like zucchini, carrots, cucumbers; Squashable fruits like bananas may not be the best lol. Handles of items like hairbrushes, sports rackets, brooms, whisks etc. can also be used. Of course, stationery like pens, markers or even straws are great if you want to insert multiple of them or test stretchability. Sky is the limit really! A word of caution, contrary to the idea floated by porn, bigger is not always the most pleasurable, usually medium sized objects are more pleasurable, and if you are a newbie with tight holes, start with thinner items. Also, generally vaginas are more stretchable than anus. Do not get carried away by porn and stuff up, explore gradually to find the most pleasurable sizes, material and texture. Also, make sure whatever goes inside you is safe, clean and hygienic.
Vibrators: This is one category which is not easy to substitute. One common object that I found to be a very good substitute for a clitoral stimulator is the electric or battery-operated toothbrush. While the higher end ones have many more rotations per minute (rpm) for the poor clit, buy an inexpensive, less powerful one for a more pleasurable experience. Note that the bristles are generally a little harsh for the sensitive area so you do need to enjoy a little bit of masochistic pain to find this object a good substitute.
Clamps: Clothespins work great for clamps and are versatile enough to be used anywhere that there are folds of skin. There are many more objects that can give the pinching sensation, like hair clips, binder clips etc. Taking two pencils to squeeze a fold of skin or nipples and binding either ends with rubber bands is also a common hack to get the effect.
Bondage: Rope from the hardware store is the immediate thought. However, there are even more discreet options when it comes to common items that can be used for bondage. Clothesline made of polypropylene etc are good substitutes, sometimes clothesline come with hooks attached at ends which make them easier to bind without knots. Regular as well as big power rubber bands can be used to bind boobs, legs etc. Belts and chains can be handy too. I once used a pet choke chain as a crotch rope, attaching its loops to a cotton strap around the waist and it felt great. I have also experimented with using mobile charging cable for boob bondage. Regular clothing corsets can also make you feel the bondage type restrictions and be aesthetically pleasing as well. Stationery like d clips, tape etc might be useful too. Make sure to always keep a pair of scissors within reach for safety while practicing bondage, especially self-bondage.
Impact Play: Some common items that can be used are rulers, canes, table tennis racket, leather belts etc. Some instruments commonly sold for pet/animal training like crops etc may also appeal to those who like hard impact play. Rubber bands can also be used to snap at skin. In fact, those sold as kinky toys may sometimes be less hardcore than the actual objects.
Other Play: Some other kinks that can be experienced using common items are listed here. Temperature play can involve applying hot or cold elements on or close to skin like Icy hots, balms, toothpaste, ice etc. Figging is inserting a skinned ginger root generally anally. Sensory deprivation kink can also be carried out using commonly available face and eye masks, ear plugs etc. Of course one needs to be careful about allergies or rashes and take other safeguards wherever applicable.

When it comes to customizing common objects and DIY toys, there are innumerable options to explore. All it needs is some inspiration, creativity and relooking at common objects with a kinky pair of eyes. Common genres of objects in my view, that can give you a plethora of possibilities are stationery, hardware items, kitchen accessories, pet care, sports and fitness equipment.

Now coming to the next part, some tips to safeguard the privacy of your play and play things:
1. Play session privacy: Needless to say, you need to choose a place and time when you are alone. If you live with flatmates, make sure to lock your room and if you don’t want your play sounds to go out, stream something regular on the side or put on some white noise. Keep safety measures to ensure you are not stuck and need help.
2. Play equipment privacy: While the idea of having one big toy chest is attractive, if you are among those who want to keep your play items away from prying eyes, a good way is to use small containers or packaging for different toys or groups, it helps in keeping them organised like nipple play items in one and bondage gear in another. Also, to keep it obscure, you can use generic packaging like those from regular or online stores.
3. Play media privacy: If you like to take pictures or videos of your play session for your amusement or for your Dominant, store them in limited places and keep track of where you have stored them or with whom you have shared them. Make sure you or someone trustworthy has access to any media of yours that is stored or uploaded. Keep the media unidentifiable or faceless for greater safety. Do not save them for longer than needed, and do not save multiple media of same session or position to avoid needless clutter. Clear browser history and temp logs for added precaution.

That’s all from my end. Let me know from your experiences, how you use common objects as kinky toys. The above lists are only introductory, feel free to add to them in the comments below or share any other feedback on the topic.
