Leather alternatives

I love the look, feel and smell of leather.

What I don’t love is the expense, required care and cruelty involved in its production.

I’m wondering if anyone has worn any alternatives?

While I’m not expecting anything to be 1:1, I’d like it to at least resemble it- so this rules out latex and rubber.

I have had a look and found some vegan leather, which does look right- but it’s more expensive than the real stuff, and it seems difficult to find any kink-gear made in it.

I’m very curious how vinyl compares. I had a friend with similar interests suggest I look into it, although at least looking at pictures online, it doesn’t look right - that being said there seems to be a massive variety in the types of vinyl clothes; so maybe I’m just not using the right search terms.

I’d never considered it at all previously!

I did a bit of a google to see if I could find anyone making any. There isn’t too much, but I did find this Vice article https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/8gvxe3/roadkill-is-the-new-black and a few small businesses specialising in making leather from roadkill.

I tacked ‘Australia’ onto the end of a search (buying things from overseas always costs a fortune in shipping), and turned up a second Vice article about making sneakers from kangaroo leather. It’s completely irrelevant for what I want- but kangaroo leather is something I never considered either.

I had a quick look, and it seems to be much cheaper than traditional leather (at least in raw form).
Full disclosure, I’m only 90% sure the following is true. We actually have two types of kangaroo here. One is a pest, and the other is endangered. So (provided it’s from the kind that’s a pest) it could potentially be way more ethical than cow leather.

Additionally, it’s aparently lighter and more durable than traditional leather, so bonus traits!
