Recently discovered bdsm world and learning to become a great Dom

Hi, I have recently discovered my interest in bdsm. I have now also realised my enjoyment in being dominant. However I would love to hear the advice of other more experienced doms. Iv read a lot around and appreciate the power play aspect of the Dom/sub world along with the improvement of ones self and improving ones sub/s. My main question at the moment is this, I have been with my gf for 9 years. We have dabbled in the bdsm world but more on the vanilla side of it. In a quick discussion with her about the Dom/sub world she suggested that she felt more Dom than sub. I do not agree with this however. Admittedly in the last year I have been lazy and far less dominant. So do people think a sub relationship is viable from this or do subs automatically know there subs. Also do Dom subs relationships make for healthy long turn relationships or is it a case that the flame burns brighter for a shorter time. All advice will be appreciated.
